Real Madrid have officially signed 22-year-old left-back Álvaro Carreras from Benfica for a reported €50 million, with the deal announced on Monday.[1] Carreras completed his move after a standout season at Benfica, during which he made 32 league appearances and played 10 times in the Champions League, helping the club win the Portuguese League Cup.[1] He returns to Madrid, where he spent three years at the club’s academy before departing for Manchester United in 2020.[1]

Carreras has signed a six-year contract with Real Madrid, tying him to the club until June 30, 2031.[5] The deal was finalized after Madrid paid his full €50 million release clause, agreeing to pay the sum in instalments after failed negotiations to lower the fee.[4] Club president Florentino Pérez welcomed Carreras as he signed his new contract at Real Madrid City, receiving a stadium replica, a watch, and a shirt with his name and number 18.[5]

His arrival comes as Madrid look to rebuild their defense following a disappointing season without a major trophy, finishing second in LaLiga, losing the Copa del Rey final, and being eliminated in the Champions League quarterfinals.[1][6] Carreras is expected to provide immediate competition for playing time at left-back, a position where Madrid struggled last season due to injuries to Ferland Mendy and unconvincing performances from Fran García.[1][2]

Carreras is described as a modern full-back: quick, technically skilled, and effective at both ends of the pitch. He fits well with Xabi Alonso’s tactical plans and joins as Madrid’s fourth signing of the summer, alongside Dean Huijsen, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Franco Mastantuono.[2] His Spanish nationality also helps with LaLiga registration rules.[2]

The transfer has also benefited Manchester United, his former club, which will receive a significant windfall—approximately £8.68 million ($11.7 million)—from a sell-on clause negotiated during his transfer to Benfica.[3][7]

Carreras will be officially unveiled at Ciudad Real Madrid, with club president Pérez in attendance.[2][5] Meanwhile, his move could trigger further changes in Madrid’s squad, especially among other left-backs who may seek moves elsewhere.[4]
