The 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), now held in August 2025, is the largest edition in its history, featuring a record 19 teams and taking place across Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, with matches in four cities and five stadiums[1]. The tournament, exclusive to players in their domestic leagues, was postponed from its original February 2025 schedule due to inadequate infrastructure in host countries[2].

Kenya, one of the hosts, started the tournament strongly with a 1-0 win over DR Congo and leads Group A with three points[1]. Group stage matches are ongoing, including fixtures featuring Morocco, Angola, Zambia, Tanzania, Madagascar, Burkina Faso, and the Central African Republic[1][8]. On August 6, Burkina Faso revived their hopes in Group B with a 4-2 victory over Central African Republic, highlighted by two converted penalties and key performances from Patrick Malo and Abdoul Baguian, while CAR debuted with their first CHAN goal[4].

The format divides the teams into four groups (three with five teams, one with four), with the top two from each group progressing to the quarter-finals. The opening match occurred at Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, while the final is scheduled for Moi International Sports Center in Nairobi, Kenya[2].

Historically, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Morocco have both won the CHAN twice, with Tunisia, Libya, and reigning champions Senegal each securing one title[2].

Outside of football, Jackie Chan recently made headlines for carrying the Paralympic torch before the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games opening ceremony and for the controversial AI de-aging effects in his latest film, “A Legend”[5].
