The latest updates for August 2025 indicate significant changes to the Child Tax Credit (CTC) program: there are no monthly federal child grant (advance payment) dates for August 2025, as the CTC for the 2025 tax year will not be distributed in advance payments but claimed as a credit on your tax return[2]. For families in Minnesota, however, state-level advance payments began in August 2025, with the first of three payments sent out at the start of the month—the following two are scheduled for the end of September and November[3].
The federal CTC for 2025 is up to $2,200 per qualifying child. The refundable portion, known as the Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC), is up to $1,700 per child[2][4]. Both the taxpayer and the child must meet strict eligibility requirements, including Social Security Numbers that are work-eligible in the United States, as set by the One Big Beautiful Bill signed into law in July 2025[4][5].
For those claiming the ACTC on their federal return, the IRS will release most refunds for direct deposit filers by March 3, 2025. Payments are not scheduled for August or any other month in 2025 at the federal level—families will receive full CTC/ACTC benefits after they file their 2025 tax returns in early 2026[1].
Only Minnesota currently offers advance state-level Child Tax Credit payments for 2025, with the first payment already disbursed in early August 2025[3].
