Emma Powell, Member of Parliament from South Africa’s Democratic Alliance (DA), has resigned as the party’s international relations spokesperson, citing ongoing harassment, threats, and intimidation related to her outspoken foreign policy positions[1]. Powell made her resignation public through a statement on X (formerly Twitter), where she described escalating targeted pressure in recent months, including allegations of illegal surveillance by the State Security Agency (SSA)[3].
This development comes after Powell alleged that she was the subject of SSA spying, which she claims created a “toxic and dangerous environment” for MPs who challenge government narratives[1]. She specifically referred to the high personal cost of standing up to the ANC and exposing its foreign relations, referencing her criticism of President Cyril Ramaphosa’s special envoy, Mcebisi Jonas, regarding US visa issues[1].
According to her statement, Powell’s recent trip to the United States was followed by new claims in the media that she had spread disinformation which undermined South Africa’s foreign and domestic policy narratives[3]. This was allegedly detailed in a confidential document submitted to the National Security Council[3]. Powell reiterated the pressures faced by women in politics, pledging to continue her work in Parliament and to empower others despite stepping away from her spokesperson role[3].
Following Powell’s resignation, the DA announced that Ryan Smith will take over as the new international relations spokesperson for the party[3]. Reports confirm that Powell’s exit followed increasing controversy and public attacks linked to her Washington, D.C. trip[4][5].
