Top-ranked Jannik Sinner is making headlines at Wimbledon 2025 after sustaining a right elbow injury during his fourth-round match against Grigor Dimitrov. Sinner fell in the opening game, causing the injury, and went on to lose the first two sets before Dimitrov retired due to a pectoral issue at 2-all in the third set. As a result, Sinner advanced to the quarterfinals, where he is set to face Ben Shelton. Following the incident, Sinner canceled his scheduled practice session on Tuesday to undergo an MRI and assess the severity of his injury. He stated, “Tomorrow we’re going to check with MRI and see if there’s something serious. And then we try to adjust it.”[1][3]
Despite the injury scare, Sinner began his Wimbledon quarterfinal match against Shelton wearing a protective sleeve on his hurt elbow, signaling he is still in competition and managing the issue as best as possible.[5]
Regardless of his results at Wimbledon, Sinner is guaranteed to keep his world No. 1 ATP ranking after the tournament. He leads by 2,730 points over No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz, making it mathematically impossible for anyone to overtake him this fortnight. Sinner’s impressive rise includes three Grand Slam titles in the past two years—the 2024 and 2025 Australian Opens and the 2024 US Open—as well as victories at the 2024 ATP Finals and four Masters 1000 events.[2][4]
So far in 2025, Sinner has continued his strong form, maintaining his top ranking and amassing a career total of 19 singles titles by age 23.[6]
