The UK National Lottery has recently undergone its largest-ever system upgrade, resulting in a planned two-day blackout from Saturday evening until Monday morning. During this period, players were unable to check tickets or numbers in shops, and the National Lottery website, online accounts, and phone app were also offline[1][2]. The upgrade involved transferring both gaming and retail systems to new platforms, a process described by Allwyn’s UK chief as a world-first at this scale, impacting over 43,500 retailers and involving more than 30 new systems, tens of thousands of retailer records, and millions of transactions[1].

Technical rehearsals spanned ten weeks in preparation for the transition, and although the update was completed on schedule, some retailers have expressed criticism regarding the new terminal equipment[4]. Despite these concerns, the system switchover is part of Allwyn’s vision to modernize the National Lottery and better serve both players and retailers[1].

With the upgrade now in place, players can resume purchasing tickets, checking results, and playing instant win games both in-store and online[3]. The upcoming EuroMillions jackpot stands at £172 million, and several new instant win games have been launched on the official site[3].
