Shein has recently settled a lawsuit with four California counties, agreeing to pay a total of $700,000 after being accused of violating state laws by failing to ship goods within 30 days of payment and not notifying consumers or offering refunds for delayed orders. As part of the settlement approved on July 9, 2025, Shein must now ensure products are shipped on time in compliance with the law[1][4].
Financially, Shein reported nearly $10 billion in revenue and over $400 million in net income for the first quarter of 2025, just before new US import tariffs took effect. The company’s profit margin rose to about 5%. However, with US tariff exemptions for low-value goods now removed, Shein faces challenges to its business model in the US, even as it shifts manufacturing to places like Vietnam. The company has also confidentially filed for an IPO in Hong Kong, with its valuation reportedly pressured to drop to around $33 billion, half its 2023 worth[2][3][5].
Regulatory scrutiny of Shein is increasing in other major markets as well. In May 2025, the European Union found several of Shein’s platform practices in breach of consumer protection laws, giving the company a deadline to propose corrective actions. The platform is also under review for compliance with the EU’s Digital Services Act, targeting transparency and accountability[7].
Alongside these legal and regulatory challenges, Shein continues to promote its progress in sustainability. Its 2024 Sustainability and Social Impact Report highlights expanded use of deadstock material and various community and environmental initiatives. According to the company, Shein now employs over 16,000 people globally and operates in more than 150 countries[6].
Overall, Shein remains a dominant force in global fast fashion but is navigating increased legal, regulatory, and operational pressures as authorities in the US, EU, and UK more closely examine its consumer practices and supply chain standards[1][2][3][4][5][6][7].
