Former Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Thando Mngomeni has been reported missing by his family, with mounting concern as he has not been seen or heard from since mid-June 2025[1]. Family members, friends, and South Africa’s football community have expressed urgent appeals for information that could help locate Thando, noting that his disappearance is out of character and deeply distressing[3].

According to his older sister, Pat Maki, the last contact was around June 16, with the last sighting at their home in Gugulethu a day or two later[1]. Efforts by both the family and the media to reach Thando have been unsuccessful, as his phone continuously goes to voicemail. The Mngomeni family has publicly appealed for assistance, asking anyone with information on his whereabouts to come forward.

Thabo Mngomeni, Thando’s brother and a former Orlando Pirates midfielder, only learned of Thando’s disappearance through social media and has also been trying, so far unsuccessfully, to make contact with him[5]. Thabo expressed confusion regarding the situation, pointing out inconsistent statements from Thando’s girlfriend and uncertainty about whether the police have been officially notified[5].
Family friend Mark Totoyi and other close acquaintances have also posted widely on social media, urging the public’s help, while confirmed police involvement in the search has not yet been publicly detailed[3][7].

The disappearance comes as a shock to the football community, given Thando’s continued involvement in local football, community outreach, and his status as a respected former professional player[2].
