Family Service Options in Gezina

Applying is not the end of it. The Gauteng Department of Education states that required documents must reach the schools you applied to within seven days of the application, or be uploaded to the system for one school so the others can view them. An application without documents is the most common way a place is lost.
You may apply to a maximum of five schools, and the Department asks that you use the Home option at least once, so that at least one application goes to a school whose feeder zone covers your home address. Applications can be made from a cellphone, and the Department sends updates by SMS to the number you register with, so use a number you will still be using in December.
If the online system is the obstacle rather than the decision, the Department runs decentralised walk-in centres where parents are helped to apply in person, open 08:00 to 16:00 during the application window. That matters for anyone without a reliable data connection, and it is a published part of the process rather than a favour.
One category works differently. Schools of Specialisation each concentrate on a single field — sport, maths science and ICT, commerce and entrepreneurship, engineering, or performing and creative arts — and admission to one requires sitting a placement test, written or practical, and scoring above average. If that route interests you, the assessment dates are published separately and are not the same as the application deadline above.

The four categories below are separate because they are separately regulated and separately priced, not because a family experiences them separately. Prices, Hours and Practical Details
On childcare, there is one check worth making before any other. A facility caring for more than six pre-school children on behalf of their parents, for part of the day or night, is required to be registered as a partial care facility under the Children’s Act 38 of 2005. Registration is applied for at the nearest department of social development or municipal office.
What makes that check useful is what registration involves. The application requires an original copy of the approved building plans, a health certificate from the local municipality, an emergency plan, a clearance certificate and a business plan setting out hours, fees, staffing and the day-care plan. A registered facility has therefore had its premises looked at by someone other than its owner, which is precisely what a parent standing in a driveway cannot do alone.

From the South African Government’s own service page on registering ECD partial care facilities at gov.za, read 2026-08-22, which states the service is free and that “it may take up to three months for your registration certificate to be issued”. That three-month wait matters when you ask. A newly opened centre may genuinely be mid-application rather than avoiding one, so the fair question is whether they are registered or have applied, and to see whichever document exists.
