Most of the public amenities serving Gezina are run by the City of Tshwane through its regional structure rather than from a single municipal office. The City lists what the regions deliver: clinic operations and environmental health, library and cultural services, sport and recreation, parks and horticulture, cemeteries and waste, roads and storm water, water distribution and sanitation.

In practice that means the building you need depends on the task, and the nearest building is frequently the wrong one. That is the single most useful thing this page can tell you, and it is most sharply true of licensing.

The regional model also explains something that confuses people about municipal services generally: a clinic, a library and a licensing counter are administered by different parts of the City, from different buildings, on different schedules, even when they serve the same street. You cannot renew a driver’s licence card there, and you cannot write a test there. Akasia will renew a card but does no testing. Only Waltloo and Centurion do the full range.

So the order of questions is: what exactly am I doing, which centres do that, and which of those is nearest — in that order. Reversing it, which is the natural instinct, is how people end up at Saambou with an expired licence card. If you are doing two things in one trip, a card renewal and a roadworthy test say, only Waltloo and Centurion will let you do both in one place.

No opening hours are published for the licensing centres or the customer care walk-in centres on the City’s own pages, and no licensing fees are published there either. Both are set provincially and change, so this page quotes neither rather than borrowing a figure from somewhere that is not the City.

What is published, and is useful, is where to walk in. The City runs customer care centres for municipal accounts and service queries, and every one of them lists the same single contact number rather than a direct line.

The missing licensing fees have a straightforward explanation. The City describes its Licensing Unit as an agent of the Gauteng Provincial Government for driver’s and vehicle licences, so the tariffs are provincial rather than municipal. The City is running the counter, not setting the price, which is why its pages carry the services and addresses but not the amounts. Ask at the centre, or confirm provincially, rather than trusting a figure from a third-party site.
