What You Need to Know
The Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority, PSiRA, is the body that registers security service providers in South Africa. It operates under the PSiRA Act 56 of 2001, publishes a Code of Conduct for Service Providers, and runs its own enforcement and complaints divisions.
The practical point for anyone hiring an armed response company, a guarding service or an alarm installer in Gezina is that PSiRA publishes its registers publicly and lets anyone search them at no cost. You do not need to take a company’s word for its registration, and you do not need to ask them for proof. You can check it yourself in about a minute.
There are two separate registers, and this is the part people miss. One covers businesses and one covers individuals. A company can be properly registered while the person it sends to your house is not, and an individual can hold a valid registration while working for a business that does not. Ask for the PSiRA number in writing
On the quote, the contract or an email, not verbally at the door. A company that will not put its registration number in writing has told you something useful before you have searched anything.

Search the business register
Open PSiRA’s business verification tool. It takes either a PSiRA number or a company name, so you can search even if they have not given you a number. Searching by name is also how you catch a number that belongs to a different company.

Check the name matches exactly
A valid number attached to a trading name you do not recognise is worth a question. Security companies do trade under other names, but you want that explained before work starts rather than after something goes wrong.

Search the individual separately
Use the individual verification tool for the guard, responder or installer who will actually be at your property. This is the step almost everyone skips, and it is the one that concerns the person standing in your driveway.

If a search returns nothing, phone the helpdesk
On 086 133 3850 during office hours, 07:30 to 16:00 on weekdays. A blank result is not proof of anything on its own: a number can be mistyped and a trading name can differ from a registered name. Confirm it with PSiRA rather than assuming either way.

Keep what you checked
Note the number, the name it returned and the date you searched. Registration status changes, so a check is only ever true as of the day you made it, which is the same reason every fact on this site carries a date.

Checking the company but not the person
Two separate registers. The company’s registration says nothing about the individual it sends to your property.
Accepting a number verbally
Get it in writing. A number read out at the gate cannot be checked against anything later.
Treating a blank result as proof
It may be a typo or a trading name that differs from the registered one. Phone the helpdesk before concluding anything.
Checking once and never again
Registration status can change. A check is true as of its date, which is why it is worth writing that date down.
