Gezina is a residential suburb rather than a destination, so most of what there is to do sits a short drive away in the rest of Pretoria. That is not a shortcoming; it means the choice is wide and the travel is short.
This page is written with one group particularly in mind. Steve Biko Academic Hospital is close by, and a lot of people reading a page like this are not tourists at all — they are family staying nearby during someone’s treatment, with an unplanned afternoon and no appetite for a research project. So the practical detail comes first, and the thing that matters most is which places actually tell you what they cost before you arrive.
On that, they differ sharply. Of the four best-known attractions near Gezina, only one publishes a full fee table and its opening hours on its own website. The others do not, and the figures floating around search results for them turn out, on checking, to belong to somewhere else entirely.

Two of these are half-day outings and two can absorb a whole one, which is the first thing to settle. Church Square and the Voortrekker Monument grounds work on an hour or two. The zoo and Freedom Park will take an afternoon properly, and rushing either is worse than not going.
Weather decides more of this than people expect. Highveld summer afternoons carry a real chance of a thunderstorm arriving in the late afternoon, which is exactly when an outdoor plan is at its most committed. Having an indoor alternative already chosen, rather than looking one up in a car park in the rain, is the difference between a change of plan and a ruined day.

Compare Local Options
The four places above are genuinely different kinds of outing and comparing them on quality would be silly. What is worth comparing is how much planning each one demands, because that is what decides whether an afternoon works.
Freedom Park asks the least of you. It publishes its hours, it publishes what every category of visitor pays, and it lists both a general number and a separate tours address. You can decide on the way there.
The zoo asks the most, for an avoidable reason. It is the single closest major attraction to Gezina and the obvious choice with children, but its site does not currently show hours or a current price, and — this is the part that catches people — it stopped accepting cash on 1 January 2026. Arriving with notes and no card is now a wasted trip. Buy online or bring a card.
Church Square costs nothing and needs no booking, which makes it the default when a plan collapses. The Voortrekker Monument sits in between: the address and number are published plainly, the practical detail is a page deeper.
If you are here because someone is in hospital, the calculus is different again. What matters then is not which outing is best but which one you can leave quickly, park close to, and do in ninety minutes without booking. On that test the free, open, no-ticket options win easily, and the ones needing a full afternoon and an online ticket do not — however good they are. It is worth being honest that a guide written for tourists usually gets this exactly backwards.

Why no price is quoted for the zoo
Because it does not publish one. On 2026-08-22 the National Zoological Garden’s ticket page carried the heading “Fees 2023-2024” and no visible current amounts. A widely repeated figure of R120 does exist in search results, but on checking it belongs to the Pretoria National Botanical Garden, a different SANBI site with a different phone number. Publishing it here as the zoo’s price would have been wrong in a way no reader could have caught.
So: 012 339 2700 for the current price, or buy through the zoo’s own online ticketing. And take a card — cash has not been accepted there since 1 January 2026.
Three practical notes that apply to all of them. Hours at South African public attractions move with the season and with public holidays, and none of the four publishes a holiday schedule, so a long weekend is exactly when a wasted trip happens. Parking arrangements differ enough that it is worth asking when you phone, particularly if someone in the party has limited mobility. And card payment is becoming the norm rather than the exception — the zoo has already stopped taking cash outright, and it is reasonable to assume the others are heading the same way.
A last word on the fees above. R80 for an adult at Freedom Park is what that site published on the day this page was checked, and South African attraction pricing is revised often enough that the figure is worth confirming if you are reading this months later. Every price on this site carries the date it was read for exactly that reason: a number without a date is a guess wearing a uniform.
